Beulah Points East

My jewelry Box was a gift from David and he discovered it at an antique store.

Recently the back wall of the inside of the box began to peel. Some how, a piece of jewelry was trapped back there. This green jewel!

This isn't mine, so it belonged to the person who owned the jewelry box before me. Unfortunately, it is only a piece of costume jewelry, and not a real emerald. This is okay though, it will fit in with all of my costume jewelry.

One thing I like about thrift stores and antique stores is that everything has a story already, since everything belonged to somebody else. Usually there is no way to find out the stories, but once in a while there are little clues, like this fake emerald.

When I found this jewel I was reminded of the short story 'The Necklace' by Guy de Maupassant. I do not want to give away the ending, but there is a crazy ironic twist in this story. It makes me cringe just thinking about it! I read a collection of Maupassants stories, and many of them had ironic twists. His stories remind me of Twilight Zone. A lot of my favorite episodes are simple stories with ironic twists, similar to Maupassants stories. Another similarity is that both Twilight Zone and Maupassant are masters at creating eeriness. Eeriness is a lot better than straight scariness because eeriness lingers.
