Deer in the Forest

Here is a new book diorama I made.

It features a merry deer lounging in the forest. The forest is one of my favorite places. It is the perfect setting for a fairy tale or a whimsical journey although the forest always has spooky undertones. To go along with my forest diorama, I thought I would add some interesting forest facts!

*Just like many modern day forests, the very first forests were full of lovely ferns. However, they weren't the ferns we are use to. These ferns stood up to forty feet tall! Other plants that lived in the original forests were giant horse tails and club mosses.

*When I walk around the city I live in, I admire all the spring flowers growing in peoples yards. Just today I was walking by a house that had batches of white flowers growing all around the yard so it looked like the house was on top of a fluffy cloud. Sometimes it seems like there are hundreds of different species sprouting up in peoples yards around Seattle. But this is nothing compared to forests. For instance, the forests of Central Africa contain over 8,000 different species of plants! (Fun Fact Found Here)

*Although it seems like buildings, industry, and cities and suburbia are popping up all around us and slowly spreading over every inch of available land, forests cover about 1/3 of Earth's land. Imagine all the different animals living in those forests. There could even be animals not yet discovered or recognized by the mainstream society. (Fun Fact Found Here)

And Speaking of forests, I just re-saw a much loved movie from my childhood for the first time in years and years. The movie is called 'The Watcher in the Woods.' It is a scary movie that takes place in the woods of England. An artsy American family holidays in a fancy house in England. They must make do with the presence of the properties owner, Bette Davis, who may be a sweet old woman or may be slightly sinister. The nosy teenage daughter, prompted by paranormal experiences, pries into the old woman's past. The poor woman is pestered into recalling the memories surrounding her daughters death. But because the teenage daughter looks like the old woman's long lost daughter, she indulges the girls whims. Chaos and ghostly creepiness ensues! The movie starts off as a ghost story but (SPOILER ALERT) ends with a sci-fi twist. This movie was actually still spooky watching it as an adult and it also was still entertaining.
