Blue Skies and Red Spots
Here are some summer pictures I took one day while hanging out in Fremont.
On Thursday, I learned two interesting things. One I learned from the radio, which reported that in England a new and interesting fad has developed. Workers of England are waking up extra early to attend dance parties that begin at six o' clock. After shaking, shimmying, and clicking their heals for a couple of hours, these dancers head off to work to begin their day. The dancing interviewees talked about how the early dances let them start their day off on a happy note. I love this idea! I like imaging an English woman taking the Tube on her morning commute. She furtively glances around, wondering who nearby also just got done dancing their tail off at a morning dance party. The lady with drooping eyelids reading the romance novel? The overworked solicitor shuffling through papers? Maybe even the stuffy looking gentlemen with a crumpled news paper in his lap! The reporter who described this new trend kept referring to the dance get-togethers as as morning raves. But when I think of raves, I think of glow sticks and Ecstasy. What was described sounded far more like an intoxicant free dance party.
The other interesting fact I learned while listening to StarTalk. This may be one of those things that most people learned in grade school, but for other people like me, I thought I'd share. On Jupiter, there is something called 'The Great Red Spot.' In pictures, it just looks like it is the natural coloring of the planet. But really, it is something far more exciting. It is a storm that has been raging for at least four-hundred years. Can you imagine a storm that just keeps going and going for hundreds of years? The Great Red Spot storm rotates counter clockwise, which means it is an anticyclonic storm. What is even more amazing is the size of this storm! It is so large that two or three Earth's could fit in the storm. It is amazing the size of some things in this universe. It's really hard to even fathom!
