Book Review: Before I Let You In by Jenny Blackhurst

Warning: If you are going to read 'Before I Let You In,' you better make sure you start reading it when you do not have any other important commitments lingering over you. This faced paced thriller will suck you in, and leave you thirsting for answers as the plot twists come racing toward you.

The story centers around three friends: Bea, Karen and Eleanor. They have been friends since childhood, and even though they are grown adults with very different life paths, their roles from childhood have carried over into adulthood when it comes to their friendship. Since early on, Karen established herself as the protector of the group. This need to protect others carried into her choice of careers. Karen became a well respected and accomplished psychiatrist.

Karen's career as a psychiatrist is rolling along at great success and she even got a promotion, but her grasp of control over her career is suddenly shook when confronted with a new patient: Jessica. Jessica gives Karen odd vibes from the get go. The young woman talks about the affair she is having with a married man. Karen becomes convinced that Jessica is having an affair with her Eleanor's husband, and she is playing some sort of sick mind game by choosing Karen as her psychiatrist.

From here, the drama unfolds along with the plot twists!

Besides being a satisfying thriller, the book is also an interesting look into female friendships, especially the dynamic between three close friends. I recommend reading this book while listening to First Aid Kit or Cat Power or Mountain Men. Read with a blanket wrapped around your shoulder and your cat on your lap. You may have that little voice in the back of your head telling you to get errands done or accomplish some other adult responsibilities, but ignore the voice and just keep reading and unveiling those plot twists!
